Flow in Daily Life

The concept of flow is a mental state originally described by a psychologist name Mihály Csíkszentmihályi. This state is the state of being completely immersed and focused in a given moment or task. Flow is the mental state that occurs when a perfect golf game is played, when a ski run is flawlessly executed, when a musical piece seems to play itself through the hands of the artist as if he is merely a conduit for the musical masterpiece. Flow is also achieved in business. You may have felt this when you sit down and things seem to just click every step of the way. Your work is effortless and you feel ecstatic and accomplished with every stroke of a key or every decision being made. Flow is the state of perfect concentration in a moment. Things just seem to “flow.” https://www.pulsefitnessaz.com/flow-in-daily-life/

The question that everybody wanting constant optimal performance seeks to answer is how flow can be achieved in daily life. Is there a way to make sure that whenever you need to get something done, can you tap into this state of flow and do it in the best possible way with the least amount of struggle? People chase flow to the point of taking drugs in an attempt to artificially induce the state. CEO’s and Wall Street execs have been known to pop the anti-narcolepsy pill Modafinil for its wakefulness effects and purported ability to increase concentration. A whole new class of supplements, known as nootropics, has grown out of the desire to achieve a higher state of awareness and optimal performance. The use of drugs like cocaine and ecstasy mimic some of the effects of being in a flow state, but the negative effects and the lack of synergy with the other neurochemicals associated with flow makes these a bad choice for anybody not wanting to go to prison or die prematurely (Kotler, 2014)

The answer in creating flow really comes down to creating the environment necessary for flow. One of the most cited conditions and often the most remembered condition for flow is high risk. Think of any daredevil, extreme athlete, or even the nervous public speaker that nails their performance. All of these people are in a high risk, or at least perceived high risk, environment and when things go well, they will often report the feelings closely associated with flow, such as out of body experience, euphoria, and sensation of being one with the task. Though flow state can often be seen in high risk environments, I would argue that the state is more often achieved in environments that are much lower risk. The writer is not in a high risk environment, neither is the musician, computer programmer, or painter. While it is true that a high risk environment may make it easier to enter the state of flow, it is not necessary.

High risk environment creates a flow state because it demands extreme concentration to ensure success. Mihály Csíkszentmihályi outlined several conditions necessary for a flow state to be achieved, one of which is complete concentration on a given task. The others include clarity of goals, knowing what needs to be accomplished; clear and immediate feedback for the task; and a sense of control about the task being accomplished (Boniwell, n.d.).

In order to create the necessary conditions for a flow state or at least a state where optimal performance can be achieved, there are several steps necessary.

  • You have to know what you are doing and why.
  • You have to ensure that clear and immediate feedback is given.
  • You have to believe the task at hand is a challenge.
  • You have to have a belief that your skill level for the task is high.
  • You have to remove distractions.

All of these items sound easy enough, but can prove very difficult, so we are going to break them down one at a time. Knowing what you are doing and why is very important, and should be relatively easy.

What is it that you are trying to accomplish?

Why are you wanting to accomplish it?

Create a plan before you begin the task. Know exactly what you are going to do and how you are going to do it.

Ensuring immediate feedback just means there has to be something telling you that you are doing a good job or not. This can be something as simple as actually typing words rather than just staring at a screen. This can get far more complicated depending on the task. In my experience, when completing firearms training, using reactive targets that both lay down and ring out when struck allow a much greater learning environment because of the immediate feedback. The sound and movement created one of the necessary conditions for flow, which is not present when shooting paper targets. In sales, the immediate feedback may be the physical or verbal response of customers. The body language cues given back when speaking to someone can provide the necessary feedback.

Believing the task at hand is a challenge is really just another way of saying that you need to challenge yourself. If you are doing something that is easy, you are not likely to enter a flow state. A master saxophonist is not likely going to enter a flow state when playing “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Try things that are hard for you. This is another way of looking at something as high risk, which we already know can help induce a flow state. At the same time, you should have the skill necessary to complete the task. In the same way a master saxophonist will not reach flow by not challenging himself, a person who has never touched a saxophone will not likely enter flow state trying to emulate Kenny G. This means that you have to practice the task that you are going to accomplish. Study it, read about it, become an expert at the task and then push yourself to the next level. Learn from the best, learn new techniques, and try them out over time.

The final thing is remove distractions. This is often easier said than done, especially in today’s society. Cell phones, computer screens, traffic, kids, work, chores, and countless other daily activities, stressors, and concerns beckon for our attention every second of the day. We often have to be able to switch focus very quickly between several things at once in order to accomplish anything because there are so many things necessary to accomplish. This will not ensure optimal performance. You have to remove distractions. This means turning off the phone or putting it out of sight. This may mean secluding yourself from others for the time it takes to accomplish a task. Music can sometimes actually help block out distractions, assuming the music itself is not distracting. Becoming present in the here and now is likely the most important condition necessary to create a state of flow. Learn to pay attention to everything you do and every interaction you have. If you are often told that you seem distracted, then that is the first place to start. Learn to let go of those distractions. There is nothing wrong with multi-tasking if you are actually completing those tasks at high levels, but a singular focus on each task in its given time will likely produce better results.

I know that you may be wondering what this has to do with health and fitness. The first and easiest answer is that when you are working at optimal levels, stress will decrease, enjoyment will increase, sleep will get better, appetites will improve, and your hormones will likely be more balanced. The next answer is that working out under the same conditions necessary for flow is going to provide you with the greatest results in the gyms Arizona. Now, I do not expect people to be floating around the gym and effortlessly deadlifting 600 pounds, but I am sure you have had those workouts that just felt great. You knew what you were doing and why, you pushed your ability while staying within the parameters of your capability, you received immediate feedback in the lifting of heavier weights, and you were completely focused.

As a coach, I see people in the gym all the time distracted by their cell phones, the news on the television, discussions with fellow members, and situations outside of the gym. Fitness, health, and a great workout start with being present. Flow starts with being present. If something is worth doing, it is worth doing it right. That means putting the time in to learn the skill, pushing yourself to the next level of achievement in the skill, taking in and adjusting to feedback, and giving undivided attention to what you are doing. Achieving the state of flow may not always be as simple as creating the perfect conditions, but creating the right conditions will help ensure that performance is at or near optimal levels in anything we do.

Contemporary shag rugs

Classic And Contemporary Shag Rugs – Oriental & Persian Rugs

If you’ve ever had the good fortune to go to Bazaar Farsh (Farsh literally meaning ‘to spread’ and also a word for carpet or rug in Farsi) in the old centre of Tehran, or the ancient bazaar in Tabriz (the capital of East Azerbaijan Province, Iran) then you will know the meaning of classic meets contemporary when it comes to all that is knotted and woven and tied and rests on a floor.

The carpet and rug bazaars themselves are places where classic, ancient and new, contemporary come together; classic being the barbars who are bent from carrying rugs on their backs, and ancient are the designs and motifs that mimic great Islamic architectural patterns, and new is the fresh wool and the dyes, and contemporary are the colors that illuminate piles of rugs spread out on platforms for viewing or draped on walls, and spilling out into the walkways…rolls and rolls of carpet and miles and piles of wool contemporary shag rugs from every dealer’s stall or shop or office where international rug trading is as ancient an art as it is a modern industry.

The scent of these market places is one that any rug lover knows without looking – the aroma of musty wool, the earthy smell of the bowls of liquid dye, mixed with the scent of narghile sheesha tobacco from hookah pipes, perhaps a simmering pot of sweet Persian tea or cardamom-scented coffee on a coal fire, some incense, and a distant whiff of kebab.

A Persian Rug

Here, in a bazaar in Tehran or Tabriz, is where you will find the Heriz design wool contemporary shag rug, brought from other cities, like the famous Ardebil, with its distinctive geometric pattern, different due to straight lines and jagged edge motifs like the Kazak rugs of southern Azerbaijan – more modern than what you’d expect from a Persian wool contemporary shag rug. The Heriz (or Hariz or Heris) wool contemporary shag rugs are thick, tough, and often less expensive than the more classic Tabriz carpets.

Although in the bazaars it can be tough to wade through the piles of rugs that have been loosely woven, or that have a low knot count, and are of poor quality, it is certain that by the time they have been inspected and reach a boat or a plane and are imported to a distant country, only the best and strongest rugs have survived the rigorous scrutiny of dealers and merchants trained in carpet buying.

Contemporary shag rugs

Quality control is to some extent what an importer is all about. The carpets that are collected by the initial buyer with an eye for color, texture and design, will then be passed on to be thoroughly examined by experienced carpet inspectors who spend of their lives on their knees.

When buyers select carpets, more than half of what they see is rejected quickly by the first inspector. Subsequent inspection may reveal an odd dye tone or a warp or a crease or a crinkle that no amount of stretching will fix, so the next ones are eliminated, and so on, until only a few select contemporary shag rugs and carpets are chosen for shipment overseas.

Mehraban runners or Mehriban contemporary shag rugs, which use the Hamadan weave, are often decorated with flowers and medallions on dark (often blue) backgrounds. These fantastic and historic rugs come from a place west of Teheran, between Sarouk and Hamadan, and are considered sturdy wool rugs having one heavy cotton weft and then thick, high quality wool, coarsely woven into fine and durable rugs, perfect for hallway runners and high traffic areas.

Another great contemporary shag rug from the region is the Bakhtiari contemporary shag rugs and carpets tinted with vegetable dyes, and although sometimes the yarn is spun by machine, they are fine carpets made from symmetrical knots single or doubled wefted. The single wefted rugs may be similar to Hamadan except that Bakhtiari tend to have larger wefting.

Karadja carpets, although similar to Hamadan, and can also be decorated with hooked medallions (somewhat like the Lambaran), but are in fact different because the wool is coarser and therefore the rugs are heavier. Karadja rugs are primarily runners or small contemporary shag rugs, rarely large carpets.

Although the word ‘Persian’ or Oriental carpet or rug may instantly conjure in western minds the idea of an ancient, old or traditional rug, this is not at all the case for the rug makers or their dealers. Since carpets are constantly being designed, woven and knotted, each piece is new, and motifs that may appear traditional may actually be variants of the original patterns, and the coloring or dyes may be in keeping with modern trends, and therefore considered very contemporary.

The other thing is that ‘antique’ to those who make carpets may simply mean something that was not made this year or last. When you live and work and sell your wares amidst buildings with walls and arches that are truly ancient, in a land that has a history as old as man, then perhaps the words modern and contemporary versus antique and traditional have a very different meaning indeed.

It is interesting to note that about 5 million weavers in Iran create carpets and a million of those are for export alone. Needless to say there are styles created that mimic both old and new flooring styles. The most common sizes are the Farsh or Qalii which are anything over 6×4 feet, the Qalicheh is anything under 6×4, and the famous Kilim rugs of the nomads are all much smaller in general (usually prayer rugs) and used abroad as toss rugs or small contemporary shag rugs.

Speaking contemporary shag rug sizes, one really, really big contemporary shag rug, perhaps the largest on record is the one in the Grand Sultan Qaboos Mosque in Muscat which is 4,343 square meters in size. (Photo of Sultan Qaboos Mosque courtesy of Iran Carpet Co.)

When seeking wool contemporary shag rugs, Persian and oriental rugs are almost all made of wool. Cotton is only for the foundation, wool is what creates the pile and what receives the wear. Some of the wool is Kork wool, Manchester wool, and even Camel Hair wool, while silk may be softer and finer it is also more expensive and less durable. Oriental silk carpets are most often wall tapestries and not intended for heavy traffic on the floor.

Why are Swimming Pool Enclosures Great for the Home

When you want to increase the value of your house, one of the best ways to do so is to construct a swimming pool. If you want to make the most out of it, we recommend getting a pool enclosure as well. Just imagine having the freedom to go on a spontaneous swim whenever you want! You will also be delighted to know that you can enjoy more benefits from swimming pool enclosures.

Having a pool enclosure allows you and your family to swim in a sheltered environment. You can enjoy year-round swimming, which can also bring various health benefits. You can also opt for a retractable enclosure that you can partially open to provide shade while fully enjoying the breeze. In this way, your loved ones can have longer swimming pool adventures, especially during sunny summer seasons. Of course, it is crucial that you consult with an expert pool enclosure designer to get the ideal design for your structure.

In this post, we are going to share some of the reasons why swimming pool enclosures are great for the home. Read through this article to discover all the wonderful benefits you can expect.

Cleaner Swimming Pool

Swimming Pool Enclosures

When your swimming pool is enclosed, you can avoid fishing for leaves, twigs, and debris in the water. Most of the time, the rubbish that lands on the surface of the cover will remain dry, and they will blow off again or fall to the sides, allowing you to collect them with ease. Moreover, since there are fewer organic matters in the water, you can keep the water clean, allowing you to cut down on chlorine consumption.

Reduced Exposure to the Sun

It is true that when you expose your skin to the sun, it naturally produces vitamin D, which can lower the risk for some types of cancer. However, too much UV rays can cause health issues. According to Cancer.org, excessive exposure to the sun can lead to premature aging and even weaken the immune system. So, it is crucial to think about your safety before jumping into your pool.

As illustrated in an article published on the New South Wales Government site, UV rays cannot go through polycarbonate, plastic, or glass enclosures. With enough sunscreen, you can swim inside your pool enclosure without worrying about UV damage to your skin.

Protect Your Kids and Pets

If you live with children and pets, you need to prevent them from accessing the pool without supervision. Of course, you cannot keep an eye on them 24/7. Swimming pool enclosures prove to be quite useful for restricting access. Whether you choose a fixed or retractable structure, you can ensure the safety and security of the pool area. Even when you are away from home, you can rest easy knowing that your kids and pets won’t fall into the waters.

Less Chemical Consumption

It is worth noting that the sun’s UV rays burn off the chlorine and other chemicals in your pool. Without swimming pool enclosures, about 35% of the free chlorine will be destroyed every hour. Consequently, you will find it challenging to balance the pH level of the water while keeping it sanitary. It can be expensive and time-consuming to continually top of the chemicals.

On the other hand, as we’ve mentioned earlier, UV rays cannot penetrate plastic, polycarbonate, and glass enclosures. So, when you build a pool enclosure, it will be easier for you to sanitize your water and balance its pH levels.

Improve Your Health

As we’ve stated, swimming pool enclosures also mean year-round access to the waters. You would not have to drive through the chilly weather and icy roads during winter just to get to a gym. With a heated pool, you can exercise without even leaving your home. You can burn the excess fats during winter by swimming or performing water aerobics. In this way, you won’t feel like a stuffed turkey after the holiday festivities.

Swimming Pool Enclosures

Researchers from the University School of Physical Education in Cracow Poland studied the effects of winter swimming. They learned that this activity releases muscle tension while improving joint mobility and immunity. With a pool enclosure, you will be able to swim even during the chilly climate, allowing you to fight stress and enhance your body’s overall health.

What to Consider When Getting Swimming Pool Enclosures for Homes

Just by looking at the benefits we mentioned above, you know that you will earn back what you spent for the pool enclosure cost. So, if you are thinking about getting one for your home, you must still consider some factors to ensure that you will get the best value for your money. Here are some details to keep in mind:

  • Patio, landscaping, and decking configuration — Think about the shape and size that will be suitable for your backyard while taking the patio, landscaping, and decking configuration into account. Keep in mind that the pool enclosure cost will mainly depend on how big the area that you need to cover.
  • Location – You should also consider whether the swimming pool area is close to trees or a garden. If so, you might need to assess if the project will require additional landscaping. Consider your personal preference and style when choosing the overall look of the pool area and its surrounding landscape.
  • Budget – The pool enclosure cost will depend on various factors, including the design, size, and materials. The rate will also depend on whether the contractor builds the enclosure on-site or if they offer pre-fabricated options.
  • Fixed or Retractable – Retractable pool enclosures offer the same benefits as one that is fixed in place. However, if you want to maximize the advantages of the structure, it is ideal to opt for an enclosure with a retractable design. As we’ve mentioned, you can draw the enclosure back in when the sun is out. In bad weather conditions, you can draw it out completely, turning your outdoor pool into a fully enclosed area.

When it comes to building the swimming pool enclosures, you need to find a reliable contractor who can deliver an innovative yet creative solution for your needs. Make sure you find one who can construct the structure, using the latest engineering tools and skills.

The reason why you need an expert to handle your web development is the technical languages involved apart from proficiency. They languages include:

  • HTML: This is fundamental for coding. It is the base for building developer languages.
  • CSS: It allows mediation between apps and the site’s design.
  • JavaScript: it determines the functionality of site and user experience.
  • PHP: A popular computer language used by over 2 million sites.
  • Swift: Used to develop Apps for Apple.
  • Ruby: Ruby on the Rails is a popular development framework used on the internet.
  • C#: One of the most popular languages today. It is simple and safe.
  • Dart: Dart has become increasingly popular. Many Google and Adobe Programmers are using the tool.

Web development goes hand in hand with apps. Work with professionals to develop applications that will make your site more accessible to your customers.

Paris Photo 2019: Brett Rogers, Director of the Photographers’ Gallery

This year’s Paris Photo at the Grand Palais appeared even more frenzied than its predecessor in 2018, which marked the transfer of the fair from the cavernous spaces in the Carrousel du Louvre to this new destination. The larger, airier building has encouraged a growing number of events and galleries to be represented – a record 140 this year. Yet in terms of content, what still appears to be missing are galleries from beyond Europe and America.

As seems to have been the trend in recent years, the major international commercial players exhibited an impressive roster of big names with extremely strong stands from Gagosian, Pace/MacGill and Fraenkel.  Of these, Gagosian alone continues to rile everyone with their refusal either to put labels near their works or disclose prices.   But where are galleries representing the very best and most interesting work now emerging from Brazil, China, India, Russia and the Middle East – surely this is a prime opportunity to try and reflect these growth areas in terms of their representation at such an important event as Paris Photo?

The best news this year was the decision to abandon the idea of an overall theme for the event – while last year’s theme of Africa worked as a generic focus for the branding of the fair, it didn’t percolate down into the bowels of the Grand Palais. It was widely agreed that the very small show of highlights from Bamako should have been given more prominence than being relegated to a small space under the stairs (especially given the Bienale’s now precarious status due to civil conflict in Mali).

Three other public institutions – Fotomuseum Winterthur, LACMA and Huis Marseille made brave and bold selections from their respective collections. This new platform for introducing the holdings of major international collections is beginning to shape up into something extraordinary within the context of the otherwise commercial imperative of Paris Photo.

Finally, worth noting as a nod towards the growing importance of incorporating genuine public programming into the fabric of the Fair, is the Talks programme, which has grown in stature  since the event relocated to the Grand Palais.  Previously this was not an area which would have warranted serious attention but with the decision to appoint an individual to curate the programme –Parachute editor Chantal Pontbriand last year and Roxana Marcoci this year – the quality and content of the talks programme has enabled an excellent range of artists and issues to be debated; one which is now proving so popular, it is often difficult to secure a seat.

Although it was difficult to find time to leave the Grand Palais, there are a growing number of offsite events worth tracking down.  AMC’s independent approach to curating was more closely aligned to the spirit of OFFPRINT, which served to bring together an array of energetic publishers – cooperatives and independents sitting cheek by jowl alongside major publishing houses, all united by their commitment to publishing interesting new work by artists/best wedding photographers nyc working both within and outside the mainstream. There was much of interest to be found here and a very different spirit at play – a more informal, collaborative atmosphere which was a welcome change after the more cloistered, competitive mood at the Grand Palais.
